The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. -Dr. Seuss
· Accelerated Reader is a computer program that Wenonah Elementary School uses as a reading incentive and it also helps teachers monitor
and manage students’ independent reading.
· Students can earn certificates, bookmarks, T-shirt pins and points (which can be redeemed for prizes) for scoring an 80% or higher on a book’s
comprehension, vocabulary or literacy quiz.
· Each teacher uses a chart to convert students’ independent guided reading levels into Accelerated Reader levels.
· Once a student has an AR level, the teacher sets the student’s reading goal for the semester based on the length of the semester, how long the
student will read for each day and the student’s book level.
· Students are then recommended to choose a book to read based on their AR reading level. This allows students to pick their own books to read,
rather than having one assigned to them.
· However, reading levels are fluid. This means if a student’s level is 4.0, he or she should choose a book of interest that is leveled from a 3.8 to a 4.2.
· Each book is leveled based on the amount of words and the reading level only. Therefore, one must remember to take the interest level of the book
into consideration when choosing as its content or themes could be for lower grades, middle grades or upper grades.
· Wenonah’s Library Media Center and classroom libraries have leveled books for students to choose from. (You can also look up book levels for
books from the public library or book orders on the AR Book Finder web site.)
· After selecting and reading a book, a student will then try to achieve his or her goal of earning a certain amount of points in the trimester by taking a
book’s quiz.
· Students can also earn certificates based on the reading goals that have been set for them.
· Accelerated Reader helps students track their own reading progress and collect data to aid in selecting appropriate books. When a student reads
a book on his or her level, he or she is met with success!
